Monsieur Le Brun, entrenado como pintor, fue el distribuidor de arte más exitoso de finales del siglo XVIII París. En 1776, se casó con Elisabeth Louise Vigée, convirtiéndose en su promotora. El artista y su hija Julie se separaron de él en el estallido de la Revolución Francesa en 1789; más tarde, la pareja se divorció pero permaneció en contacto. Monsieur Le Brun mostró este retrato de sí mismo como un aspirante experto e historiador de arte en el Salón de 1795.
