Geometric engraving from Redan rock engraving site, near Vereeniging, South Africa. The site and the beautiful engravings are under threat, with many of the engravings now destroyed.This fragile heritage holds many stories and histories of some of the earliest cultures of South Africa - these geometric engravings were likely made by Khoi herder communities and may be associated with coming-of-age rituals. There are differing opinions of what the images represent and meant to the makers.This original engraving, was removed from the site in the early 1900s and now is curated by the Rock Art Research Institute, Wits, and is on display at Origins Centre.
