Lanterns were used on the altar and in processions. The light from torches or candles was diffused through openings or windows on the sides of the lantern which would thus illuminate the altar or the indoor or outdoor path of a procession.The form and decoration of this lantern, which was meant for processional use, indicates that it is a recent work (20th century). The three sides contain large oval openings; the sloping roof is decorated in a manner similar to the sides, without overlapping them. The well-defined corner columns are surmounted by pinnacles, while the whole composition is topped by a rounded Latin cross. It is connected to the pole by a flattened gored join.
