Antonino Sciascia was an Italian physician and scientist born on November 19, 1839, in Canicattì, Italy. He graduated from the University of Palermo with a degree in Medicine and Surgery. Dr. Sciascia dedicated his life to studying and perfecting phototherapy, developing a device called the photocautery. This device was designed to concentrate sunlight for therapeutic purposes. He presented his invention at the XIII Congress of Ophthalmology in Palermo in 1892 and at the XI International Medical Congress in Rome in 1894. Although his work did not initially gain much recognition, it later influenced other scientists, including Dr. Niels Ryberg Finsen, who used Sciascia's method to treat various diseases and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1903. Disappointed by the lack of acknowledgment, Dr. Sciascia retired from scientific events and continued practicing medicine in his hometown until his death on April 12, 1925.
