John Shaw Smith was an Irish artist born in Dublin in 1856 and died in 1950. He was a painter and photographer, known for his landscapes and architectural studies. He was a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy and exhibited regularly in Dublin and London. He was also a member of the Irish Photographic Society and was active in promoting photography as an art form in Ireland. He was a contemporary of George Bernard Shaw and shared his political and social views. He was also interested in eugenics and alphabet reform, and opposed vaccination and organized religion. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925.
