The Master of the Salem Altar is an anonymous painter from the Netherlands, who was named after the Salem Altar, of which the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum owns two panels. The master probably worked in Leiden or Gouda around 1490-1510. He is known for his detailed and realistic style, which is evident in the Annunciation to the Virgin, a painting that is part of the Salem Altar. The painting shows the Virgin Mary in her bedroom, with the angel Gabriel on the left and God the Father in the sky on the right. The painting is considered to be a masterpiece of the Northern Renaissance.
