Beham et son frère aîné Sebald étaient réputés comme imprimeurs et peintres. Ils étaient actifs à Nuremberg jusqu'en 1525, quand ils furent bannis pour s'être opposés à la Réforme protestante. Par la suite, Barthel s'installe à Munich catholique pour servir de peintre de cour aux ducs bavarois William IV et Ludwig X. La gardienne de ce portrait d'arrestation, Leonhard von Eck, fut chancelière de William IV et un puissant adversaire de la Réforme. Une gravure d'après ce portrait est inscrite avec le nom de Leonhard von Eck, son âge (quarante-sept), et les initiales de l'artiste, avec la date 1527.
