Hew Charles Torrance was born on June 5, 1859, in Old Cumnock, United Kingdom. He was the youngest of the nine children of John Torrance and Ann Crichton. Torrance was a Pittsburgh native and a photographer known for his depictions of the city's mills and neighborhoods. He was part of a group of Pittsburgh photographers that included R.W. Johnston and Luke Swank. Torrance passed away in 1931.
