Sydney Kumalo was a South African sculptor. He became known for his bronze sculptures of people and animals. Born in Johannesburg in 1935, he grew up in an urbanized Zulu family environment. He attended Madibane High School in Soweto, South Africa before studying at Polly Street Art Centre from 1948 under Cecil Skotnes. Kumalo won international acclaim through high-profile exhibitions during the mid-1960s and was represented by the Goodman Gallery until his death in Johannesburg in 1988.
