Alexander Nikolayevich Samokhvalov was a Soviet Russian painter, watercolorist, graphic artist, illustrator, art teacher and Honored Arts Worker of the RSFSR, who lived and worked in Leningrad. He was a prominent figure in the Socialist Realism movement and was known for his portraits, landscapes, and genre scenes. Samokhvalov was born in Bezhetsk, Russia in 1894 and studied at the Higher Art School of the Imperial Academy of Arts in Petrograd. He later studied at the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in Leningrad. In 1923, he became a member of the Leningrad Union of Artists. Samokhvalov's work was widely exhibited in the Soviet Union and abroad, and he received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to Russian art. He died in Leningrad in 1971.
