Early Life and Influences

Growing up in a poor family, Arkhyp Kuindzhi was forced to make a living from a young age. After losing his parents at the age of six, he worked at various jobs, including a church building site and a corn merchant's shop. His rudimentary education came from a Greek friend who taught him, followed by attendance at the local school. In 1855, at 13-14 years old, Kuindzhi visited Feodosia to study art under Ivan Aivazovsky, though he was only tasked with mixing paints. Instead, he studied with Adolf Fessler, Aivazovsky's student. This brief encounter significantly influenced his early work, as noted by English art historian John E. Bowlt.
