Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius was a German botanist and explorer. He travelled extensively through Brazil between 1817 and 1820 while collecting botanical specimens. His most important work was the Flora Brasiliensis, which he initiated in 1840 and completed posthumously in 1906. Martius also published numerous other works on plants, including Nova Genera et Species Plantarum Brasiliensium (1823-1832) and Icones selectae Plantarum Cryptogamicarum Brasiliensium (1827). He was a professor of botany at the University of Munich from 1826 until his death in 1868. Martius is credited with introducing the word hypothecium and for his work on palm trees, which he documented extensively in Historia naturalis palmarum (1823-1850). He was also interested in the languages and cultures of Brazil's indigenous peoples.
