David Drew Zingg was an American photographer and journalist, born on December 14, 1923, in Montclair, New Jersey. He studied at Columbia University in New York City, majoring in history and literature. Zingg's career in journalism began when he worked in the newsroom of NBC, and later volunteered in the U.S. Army Air Force during the Second World War, where he was based in England.
After being grounded, Zingg became a war correspondent in France and Germany for the Armed Services Radio. In 1950, he married Elizabeth Foulk and had three sons: Peter, Christopher, and Drew. During this period, Zingg was the editor of the United Fruit Company house organ, Unifruitco. He also worked as an editor, writer, and reporter for Look and Life magazines in New York City.
As a freelance photographer, Zingg contributed to various publications, including Look, Life, Esquire, Show, Town and Country, GQ, Sports Illustrated, Vogue, Interview, El Paseante, Zoom, Modern Photography, and Popular Photography. His work also appeared in The New York Times, the London Sunday Times, the Sunday Telegraph, and The Observer. Notable Works Some of Zingg's notable works include his coverage of Brazil's development, including the construction of Brasilia. He was also instrumental in arranging for the seminal 1962 concert of Bossa Nova at New York's Carnegie Hall.
