His life took an interesting turn when, as a young boy, he drew a horse, which caught the attention of King Faisal I, who promised to provide him with a scholarship to study art in Europe. Although the King passed away before fulfilling his promise, Faeq Hassan eventually received a scholarship to study at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, graduating in 1938.
Upon returning to Baghdad, Faeq Hassan co-founded the Painting Department at the Fine Arts Institute (1939-1940) with his friend, artist, and sculptor Jawad Saleem. He also established Al-Ruwad (The Pioneers Group), a pivotal art group in the 1930s, serving as its President for many years. This group aimed to incorporate local phenomena into art, bridging the gap between Iraqi heritage and modern art.
