Jean Jacques Marie Carle Vital Elshoecht was a French sculptor born on August 10, 1797, in Dunkerque, France. He was the son of a sculptor and began his artistic career by contributing to his father's drawing school in Dunkerque. Elshoecht later moved to Paris to study under the baron Bosio and became known for his sculptures, including portraits and religious subjects. He exhibited his work at the Salon de 1824 and went on to create over two hundred works of art, many of which are preserved in the Musée de Dunkerque. Despite facing setbacks and criticism, Elshoecht remained a dedicated artist and was recognized for his talent and generosity.
