Jorge Juan y Antonio de Ulloa were Spanish naval officers, scientists, and administrators. Jorge Juan y Santacilia was born in Novelda, Alicante, Spain in 1713 and Antonio de Ulloa was born in Seville, Spain in 1716. They are generally regarded as two of the most important scientific figures of the Enlightenment in Spain. In 1735, they joined the French Geodesic Mission to what is now the country of Ecuador, which established definitively that the shape of the Earth is an oblate spheroid, flattened at the poles. Ulloa served as governor of Huancavelica (1758–64) and as the first Spanish governor of Louisiana in 1766. Jorge Juan y Santacilia became a protégé and collaborator of Zenón de Somodevilla, 1st Marquess of Ensenada, and undertook an eighteen-month mission of industrial espionage in London. He served as ambassador plenipotentiary to the Sultan of Morocco in 1766–1767, and as director of the Seminary of Nobles of Madrid from 1770 until his death in 1773.
