Mai Miyake is a Japanese artist who was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1975. She is self-taught and started working as a full-time artist in 2001. Miyake's activities have expanded since her solo exhibition at Art Tower Mito in Ibaraki, Japan. She is known for her restless exploration of Japanese culture and heritage, continually interrogating and experimenting with traditional Japanese art forms. Miyake's work often reflects on the nature of her national identity and the friction between modernity and tradition in Japanese culture. She has exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo and the National Art Center in Osaka. Miyake's work is held in numerous private and public collections, including the British Museum in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
