Gastone Novelli was born in Vienna on August 1, 1925. He received a classical education in Rome, where he had moved with his family, and became involved in the Italian resistance movement in 1943. He was imprisoned and briefly incarcerated. After his release, he began his artistic career, initially focusing on figurative painting before moving towards abstraction. He was a key figure in the development of Italian Informalism, a movement characterized by its emphasis on materiality and gesture. Novelli's work often featured rough textures and bold, expressive brushstrokes, and he frequently incorporated found objects and materials into his compositions. He died in Rome on November 22, 1968.
