George Lovett Kingsland Morris was an American artist, writer, and editor who advocated for an 'American abstract art' during the 1930s and 1940s. He is best known for his Cubist sculptures and paintings. Born into a privileged family in Manhattan, New York City on November 14, 1905, Morris was the second son of Augustus Newbold Morris and his wife, Elizabeth Kingsland.

Early Life and Education

Morris studied at Yale University in 1928 and then the Art Students League from 1928-30. He studied with the Realist artists John Sloan and Kenneth Hayes Miller at the Art Students League. While in Paris, he became a confirmed abstractionist, and continued writing and publishing on modern movements upon his return to New York.

Artistic Career

During World War II, Morris worked for a time in the Office of Strategic Services. In 1935, Morris married fellow artist Estelle Condit 'Suzy' Frelinghuysen. She was the daughter of Frederick Frelinghuysen and his wife Estelle B. Kinney. Morris and his wife were avid collectors of modern art and were major benefactors of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
