Corning Glass Works, also known as Corning Incorporated, is an American multinational technology company that specializes in specialty glass, ceramics, and related materials and technologies including advanced optics, primarily for industrial and scientific applications. The company was founded in 1851 in Corning, New York, and has since become one of the world's biggest glassmakers. Corning is known for its product and process innovations, having won the National Medal of Technology and Innovation four times. The company was originally named Corning Glass Works until 1989, and was involved in the consumer products market until 1998 when it sold its Corning Consumer Products Company subsidiary. Corning is one of the main suppliers to Apple Inc., and is responsible for the development and manufacture of Gorilla Glass, used by many smartphone makers.
