Wu Daozi (680–c. 760), also known as Daoxuan, was a Chinese artist of the Tang Dynasty. He was a visionary artist from ancient China, is credited with giving rise to the revolutionary art form known as the “Hui Daozi” (literally, “the eagle”). He was born in Yangdi, Henan province and learned calligraphy from Zhang Xu and He Zhizhang, before specialising in painting. He pioneered realistic techniques, the formal establishment of brushwork, and landscape painting. He painted figures with round strokes so as to show their flowing clothes.
