Frederico Ressano Garcia was a Portuguese engineer, professor of engineering, politician, and administrator. He is notable for having directed the expansion and renewal of Lisbon's urban area in the late 19th century. Ressano Garcia was influenced by the technical and aesthetic concepts followed by Georges-Eugène Haussmann in the renovation of Paris during the 1850s and 1860s. He designed and led the construction of several notable structures, including Avenida da Liberdade, Praça Marquês de Pombal, Avenida 24 de Julho, and the Ribeira Nova Market. Ressano Garcia's work had a significant impact on Lisbon's urban landscape and his legacy continues to be felt in the city today.
