Sara Anstis is a contemporary artist born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1991. She currently lives and works in London. Her artistic style often incorporates sensuous soft pastels and oil paint to create worlds that explore subjectivity, mythology, and ecology. Anstis's paintings and site-specific installations feature surreal landscapes, figures, anthropomorphic flora, and symbolic objects that vibrate both materially and narratively. The indeterminate beings in her landscapes are assertive of their autonomy while existing peripatetically and close to the margins of survival. Her works celebrate and challenge the history of the nude, with figures shaped by smooth gradients of color described as 'wearing the clothes of nakedness.' Anstis's interest in storytelling and organic hybridity is reflected in her use of allegorical elements from Greek and other traditions.
