Assieme al suo compagno di St Andrew, questo dipinto in olio su legno fu venduto all'Accademia di San Luca nel 1821 dal pittore neoclassico e antiquario Vincenzo Camuccini. Il dipinto è stato storicamente attribuito sia ad Alessandro Allori o al suo maestro Bronzino, ma lavori di pulizia e conservazione eseguiti nel 1985-1987 lo confermano come opera di Bronzino. La rappresentazione scientificamente accurata della muscolatura del santo fieno sembra essere stata ispirata dal De Humani Corporis di Andreas Vesalius Fabrica Libri Septem, pubblicato in Basle nel 1543.
