L'abito da sera in raso chic che collezionista e filantropista Catharine Lorillard Wolfe indossato per ritratti sedute a Parigi è la sua reputazione come "quieto e inesorabile". Wolfe, il primo benefattore femminile del Met, è stata detta la donna più ricca e non sposata degli Stati Uniti. Suo cugino John Wolfe incoraggiò il suo patronato di Cabanel, un celebre ritrattista della società e pittore di genere, e altri preeminenti artisti accademici europei. Ha lasciato in eredità questo ritratto, in mezzo a numerose opere d'arte, al museo nel 1887 insieme ad una dotazione di acquisizioni, un dono arruolato dalla stampa come elevando notevolmente il profilo delle collezioni pubbliche di arte moderna a New York.
