Questo ritratto enigmatico è difficile da posizionare geograficamente e ha pochi, se del caso, paralleli stilistici. In precedenza era attribuita alla scuola lombarda, in gran parte a causa del suo formato di profilo puro italiano, ma la sua tecnica sembra essere nord-europea. Nel 1520 tali ritratti divennero alla moda ad Augusta, dove la corte degli Asburgo imperiale aveva stretti legami con la Lombardia, e un'attribuzione dell'opera attuale ad un pittore in quella città sembra più prudente.
