Ad un certo punto della sua storia, questo ritratto di un uomo sconosciuto acquisì la firma e la data che appaiono sullo sfondo giusto: "Goya 1780". L'inflessibile, non del tutto lusinghiero, approccio alla sitter evoca il pittore spagnolo Francisco Goya (1746–1828), ma la gestione di questo ritratto non è niente come Goya. Gaspare Traversi (ca. 1722–1770) è stato proposto come autore, anche se questo non è universalmente accettato.
