Un devoto Sant'Antonio sembra celeste, ma a cosa? Le storie attaccate alla sua vita possono offrire un indizio. La leggenda dice che il Cristo bambino gli apparve in una visione divina. Questo dipinto stretto probabilmente apparteneva a una pala d'altare multi-pannello la cui immagine centrale raffigurava la Vergine e il Bambino. Sant'Antonio avrebbe offerto loro le sue preghiere. Affamato per il suo sorprendente realismo, Carlo Crivelli tratta ogni dettaglio di questa figura con il suo stile preciso – dalle vene nella fronte del santo alle torniture della sua cintura di corda.
