Il dipinto , che fu posseduto per la prima volta dal primo ministro manuel de godoy , che era conosciuto come un avido donnaiolo , originariamente era appeso nella sua casa di fronte alla maja nuda in modo tale che la maja nuda potesse essere rivelata in qualsiasi momento con l'aiuto di un meccanismo a puleggia . durante l'inquisizione spagnola , il dipinto è stato rubato . si è tenuto due volte alla royal academy of fine arts di san fernando , e ora si tiene nel museo del prado , da 1901 .
