Secondo l'interpretazione tradizionale , raffigura il mito greco del titano crono ( nel titolo romanizzato a saturno ) , oms , temendo che sarebbe stato rovesciato da uno dei suoi figli , mangiato ognuno alla nascita . Il lavoro è uno dei 14 dipinti neri che goya dipinse direttamente sulle pareti della sua casa tra qualche tempo 1819 e 1823 . Successivamente è stato trasferito su tela Goya's morte e da allora è stato detenuto nel museo del prado di madrid .
