Gli occhi nuvolosi di questo botanico olandese mostrano il glaucoma che alla fine lo ha accecato. Georg Eberhard Rumphius trascorse la maggior parte della sua vita nelle isole Maluku, parte di una colonia olandese nelle Indie Orientali. Ha fatto studi approfonditi di piante e animali locali, ma è stato travolto da tragedia personale e morto prima che i suoi manoscritti fossero pubblicati. I libri di conoscenza scientifica divennero più comuni in Europa durante il 1600 e il 1700. Hanno contribuito al campo della raccolta e della classificazione – elementi importanti del museo moderno.
