Questo affresco magnificamente esemplifica la rottura di Giotto con le tecniche bizantine. Egli crea una storia altamente emotiva con la combinazione di elementi di dipinti tradizionali bizantini, come il layout dimensionale e l'iconografia, con i suoi volti stilizzati che mostrano una risposta emotiva alla morte di Cristo. Il risultato tira lo spettatore sulla scena invitandoli a testimoniare il dolore e l'angoscia della Lamentazione. Si possono quasi sentire le sobs delle donne e i brividi degli angeli sopra.
