L'opera, un olio su cartone, fa parte delle opere di Giovanni Segantini nei suoi primi anni di attività ed è caratterizzata da una estrema semplicità compositiva. Il tavolo è allestito con un cesto di fichi posti in una composizione piramidale, mentre il piano anteriore, coperto da una tovaglia bianca, contrasta con lo sfondo scuro e mette in risalto le pelli di frutta lucide. Le foglie e il cesto tessuto, entrambi dipinti in tonalità di verde, riflettono la loro ombra sul tavolo, così come il limone raffigurato da solo nell'angolo destro, mentre i fichi, illuminati da raffinati tocchi di luce, spiccano nel centro della composizione.
