Nel 1900 l'imprenditore Ermengildo Castiglioni decise di costruire un palazzo in Corso Venezia: nelle sue intenzioni l'edificio doveva differenziarsi da tutti gli altri, ed è per questo che commissionò all'architetto Giuseppe Sommaruga, noto per diverse soluzioni interessanti. Questo atteggiamento del cliente, quasi come un nobile seicentesco disposto a mostrare la sua grandezza, si trova nell'edificio (in particolare imponente rispetto al resto dell'Art Nouveau italiano) e nel desiderio di creare un edificio con uno stile piuttosto nuovo per l'Italia (l'Art Nouveau, infatti) in uno dei più
