Bella ed elegante, Serena Pulitzer Lederer era una star della società viennese di turno del secolo. Per questo ritratto, commissionato dal marito, l'industriale August Lederer, Klimt impiegava pennellate morbide e sinuose per presentare Serena come apparizione in bianco. "Un fiore retto, a lungo speronato... come un tulipano nero", enthused un critico quando il dipinto è stato mostrato nel 1901 alla decima mostra della Secessione di Vienna — un gruppo fondato da Klimt e altri artisti quattro anni prima, con l'obiettivo di mettere la città all'avanguardia del mondo dell'arte internazionale. I Lederers formarono successivamente la più bella collezione del lavoro di Klimt in mani private.
