Lycidas era il titolo della poesia di John Milton sull’annegamento di un giovane pastore. Thomas lo mostra guardando le ninfe che nuotano in un ruscello. Ha modellato questo nudo a grandezza naturale dal suo servo Antonio durante il periodo in cui viveva nel sud Italia. La scultura fu inviata alla Royal Academy per la mostra nel 1905, ma fu rifiutata per apparire troppo ordinaria e realistica. A seguito di uno scandalo pubblico, è stato mostrato invece alla New Gallery. Lycidas fu successivamente gettato in bronzo e presentato al Tate da Sir Michael Sadler, noto collezionista di arte moderna.
