Steen ha fatto una specialità di raffigurazioni auto-deprecanti della sua famiglia indisciplinata. Questo dipinto si concentra sulla figura invitante di sua moglie, che guarda lo spettatore con un bicchiere da vino vuoto in mano. Steen, il suo volto arrossito di drink e un cappello comico sulla testa, si siede all'estrema sinistra; accanto a lui, con una salsiccia nel cappello, è Hans Worst, la stessa figura teatrale raffigurata da Hals in un lavoro vicino. Ad oggi nei Paesi Bassi, “una famiglia di Jan Steen” rimane proverbiale per il disordine e il caos domestico.
