Jan Steen si ritrasse come artista autocosciente, decente in nero, con una tenda infuocata sullo sfondo. Con questo tipo di autoritratto seguì l'esempio di famosi maestri come Tiziano e Rembrandt. Il ritratto è un'eccezione nell'opera di Steen. Di solito si dipinse nel ruolo del comico.
