Van Goyen dipinse frequentemente la vista distintiva della città olandese di Dordrecht. L'audace gran parte della sua chiesa principale, la Groote Kerk, con la sua incompiuta spire, domina la vista attraverso l'incrocio del fiume occupato Maas. L'ha dipinto più di 20 volte da distanze variabili e in diverse condizioni atmosferiche. Qui i venti blustery spingono le vele di un traghetto-barca e montano le onde tritate che rocciono la barca dei pescatori. La tonalità marrone generale è rinfrescata da un cielo blu chiaro, scorciato attraverso le nubi scolpite, e movimentato dal brillante cappotto rosso di un passeggero a canottaggio. Nonostante fosse uno dei più prolifici artisti del paesaggio olandese van Goyen morì in debito, avendo perso un sacco di soldi speculando sul prezzo dei tulipani nel 1637.
