Corot fu uno dei principali rappresentanti della pittura paesaggistica realista francese, e precursore dell'impressionismo. Aveva già 76 anni quando ha completato questo dipinto, che sintetizza le caratteristiche più importanti della sua arte. Il suo lavoro era eccezionale nel suo tempo, e nel suo desiderio di raffigurare la natura sinceramente era un precursore importante di quello che sarebbe venuto.
