Oltre ai paesaggi, Corot ha lavorato nello studio sugli studi dalla vita. Gli amici maschili o le ragazze che modellavano per lui variavano le loro pose durante le sedute, come Corot fece numerosi schizzi, e poi scelse un atteggiamento o un'espressione che avrebbe potuto usare più tardi in una composizione completa, fondendo così il realismo con sentimento e allegoria. Così trasfigurato, i suoi modelli diventano archetipi, figure allegoriche e divinità. In questo dipinto il modello è stato trasformato in un musetto a piedi nudi profondamente assorbito in un libro, la sua testa coronata di fiori.
