Negli ultimi anni, Corot dipinse diverse figure. In questi dipinti il sitter, occasionalmente un amico in posa in studio, viene trasferito in un mondo dolce poetico che riflette la personalità della persona ritratta. In tali casi il soggetto diventa un archetipo o un'allegoria, e spesso appare immerso in un profondo recupero. Corot a volte completa le metamorfosi del suo modello dando successivamente all'immagine un titolo preso in prestito dalla letteratura, come è il caso in Valléda, l'eroina di Chateaubriand Les Martyrs.
