Dal suo secondo viaggio italiano nel 1834 Corot ha riportato i paesaggi permeati da una sorprendente luminosità, in particolare quelli di Volterra e Venezia. Questi schizzi fedeli prelevati dalla natura sono stati successivamente rielaborati in studio o tenuti come ricordi per composizioni successive eseguite dalla memoria.
