Negli anni 1860 e '70, Corot pose spesso giovani parigini di classe operaia in costumi esotici, forse evocando contadini che aveva dipinto in Italia nel 1825–28. L'introduzione di oggetti di studio, tuttavia, collocare i lavori successivi più quadrati nella tradizione della pittura di genere.
