Secondo il diario dell'artista, questo dipinto raffigura una figura della mitologia greca, Echo. Fu commissionata da Catherine Lorillard Wolfe, un grande patrono della pittura francese contemporanea e del Met, e divenne la prima opera di Henner ad entrare in un museo americano. Come la tela presente, le altre due versioni di questa composizione sono state acquistate anche da collezionisti femminili. Uno è ora nel Museo nazionale Jean-Jacques Henner, Parigi; l'altro non è stato situato.
