Nel 1784, il tanto ammirato scultore francese Jean-Antoine Houdon accettò di eseguire una statua di marmo di George Washington per il Campidoglio di Stato della Virginia a Richmond, e viaggiò in America l'anno successivo per fare una maschera di vita del suo soggetto. Oltre a servire come aiuto per completare la statua di marmo finale, la maschera divenne la base per molti gesso e terra-cotta busti di Washington, tra cui questo. Houdon ha modellato la prima di queste piccole somiglianze mentre ancora negli Stati Uniti, e prima di tornare in Francia l'ha presentata a Washington. La statua in marmo ha richiesto circa dieci anni per completare e risiede ancora nel Campidoglio della Virginia.
