In un paesaggio con alberi, in primo piano, ci sono due figure, una femminile e una maschile, quest'ultima delle quali è morta. Oltre a lui c'è un quiver di frecce. In piedi, due cani guardano la scena. Questa scena ritrae il momento in cui Venere si spaventa dopo aver saputo che Adonis, il suo giovane e bello amante, era stato ucciso da un cinghiale. Per renderlo omaggio, trasforma il suo cadavere in un fiore che gli prende il nome, come viene descritto in Metamorfosi (10.717-739).
