Dopo aver frequentato Fudosha, Tsunetomo si è laureato presso la Tokyo School of Fine Arts. Ha iniziato la rivista Hosun insieme ad Hakutei Ishii e altri. Nel 1914 andò in Europa e simpatizzò con lo stile di C_zanne. Tornò in Giappone l'anno successivo. Nel 1922 prese parte alla fondazione di Shunyokai. Anche se ha iniziato come artista di yoga, dopo il ritorno dall'Europa, ha ritratto la natura in Musashino e distretti lacustri in pennellate poetiche di inchiostro e lavaggio e è stato lodato come “il poeta delle pianure. ”
