Nel corso dei loro viaggi missionari, gli apostoli Paolo e Barnaba arrivarono a Lystra in Asia Minore. Gli abitanti pagani, testimoniando la cura miracolosa di uno storpio di Paolo e Barnaba, credevano che fossero Mercurio e Giove venire sulla terra in forma umana. Quando il sacerdote del tempio di Giove portò buoi e ghirlande per fare un sacrificio gli apostoli affittano i loro vestiti in sgomento. Con le loro esortazioni essi impedirono il sacrificio che ebbe luogo. Jacob Pynas ha trattato questo argomento due volte. Il dipinto attuale è forse la versione precedente, anche se non ci sono prove per sostenere questa ipotesi.
