Pietro da Cortona è meglio conosciuto per il suo capolavoro di illusionismo barocco, il soffitto della Grande Sala del PalazzoBarberini, Roma, affrescato tra il 1632 e il 1639. Descrivendo una Allegoria della Divina Provvidenza, il soffitto glorifica la famiglia Barberini, tra cui Papa Urbano VIII. Questo studio è preparatorio per la figura femminile che personifica Roma. Un’esperta esplosione della forma abbreviata della figura, accesa dall’alto, è uno degli studi più belli della Commissione.
